Bhopal gas tragedy is considered as the world’s worst industrial disaster. Bhopal Gas Tragedy is also known as the Bhopal Disaster in which thousands of people lost their lives. It is considered the world’s worst industrial disaster. It occurred on the cold wintry night in the early hours of 3 December 1984. It was midnight when the people of Bhopal have slept already but in the union carbide (India) limited factory some chemical reaction had started that resulted in the leakage of poisonous methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas from a tank of the factory. due to this leakage, the cloud formed by the gas started to descend in the sky and it soon it covered the whole city in its garb. The city and the lakes transformed into the gas chamber as a result of it.
What is Methyl isocyanate?
MIC, the methyl isocyanate is used as the chemical in the making of polyurethane foam, pesticide, and plastics. It is managed in a liquid state so that it can be easily burned and it is explosive.it diffuses in the air very quickly and it has a very strong smell. It has a molecular formula of CH3NCO or C2H3NO and the gas has a molecular weight of 57.05 g/mol. It is used in the manufacturing of pesticides, plastics and polyurethane foam.
After Leakage of Gas
The lives of around 3000 people were lost and many thousands of people got physically impaired or affected in some forms. Masses of people were killed, infected and injured. The business setup got interrupted and the lifestyle of people got severely affected.
In the tragedy around 3000 lives of innocent people were lost and thousands and thousands of people were physically impaired or affected in several forms. The whole environment of the city got poisonous. the city was polluted, the flora and fauna got severely affected and the ecological system was smashed.
It was recorded that around 40 tonnes of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas got leaked along with some other toxic chemicals from the union carbide factory.
This is to be noted that if the toxicity in the air touch 21 ppm (parts per million) then inhaling such toxic concentrated gas can result in sudden death within some minutes. the toxic concentration in the air at the time of Bhopal tragedy was very high even the value of toxicity concentration was more than multiple times of the described limit.
Reasons behind MIC leakage took place?
According to official records, the MIC leakage started from the plant numbered C. methyl isocyanate gas was mixed with water for the cooling of the plant. This mixture led to the creation of gases in the multitudes of quantity and this generation exerted huge pressure on tank number 610. As a result, the pressure of the gas multiplied in multiple times and got released in the atmosphere in the exposing tonnes of toxic particles in the air. The poisonous air diffused in the air of the entire city. It is said that approximately around 5 lakh people of the city were exposed to the MIC Leakage.
After this incident on the 3rd December 1984, more than half the population of the city complained about the feeling of sickness, itchiness in eyes, skin, coughing, and problems while breathing. People observed having pneumonia, internal haemorrhage, and death. The people living in the countryside of the area were mostly affected by this incident.
The leakage incident resulted in worst results as the alarm system of the factory didn’t work and on the next morning, multitudes of the people were admitted to hospitals complaining about different kinds of severe health problems.
On the time of tragedy, Bhopal didn’t have many hospitals to accommodate such large number of patients. People were in a state of constant confusion, they were not capable of breathing and they were suffering from serious illness and they don’t know the reason behind their suffering. The doctors of the hospitals were also very confused to see a lot of patients suddenly complaining to have a similar illnesses.
According to the data, people were observed to suffer from dizziness, skin irritation, sudden blindness and rashes, etc. the Bhopal city had witnessed more than 50,000 of patients diseased due to the MIC leakage.
