COVID -19 Pandemic is affecting IIT and IIM students by losing job offers secured by them in Campus Placements
The slowdown and uncertainty caused in companies lead in revoking of job offers of IIT and IIM students. Institute addressed the companies to keep promises.
IIT and IIM had campus interviews just about seven weeks ago. Both the students and the placements committees were glad that in this time of pandemics, the jobs offers were fairly healthy despite being affected by slowdown like scenarios.
But their happiness flew away in no time when their placement cell numbers started ringing up without break. It was the students who got placed by the placement companies, they were calling to enquire their offers or the hiring companies to give them more time or fir deferring the offers.
Director of IIT Delhi, V Ram Gopal Rao said via a LinkedIn post that companies should note that these bright students have the capabilities to rescue them out from the recession faster than they can ever imagine.
COVID -19 pandemic has become the reason for revoking of job offers at IITs and IIMs in view of the uncertainty caused among companies. According to the placement committee rules of these educational institutions, the student will not be able to take part in future placement cells.
The head of placement at an older IIT stated, “we have had one major consulting firm take a step back and say that they wouldn’t be able to honor the offers made. However, we are still engaging with them to see if at least five to seven students could be offered jobs post-October,”. Initially,18 students had grabbed the offers.
This is a grim situation as the current placement rules debarred the students from appearing in any campus interview once they ground a job offer in their hands. The rules are more strict as it disallows to appear them even if the offer is revoked by the company in later stages.
But, the current scenario made the placement committees to bring some change in this rule by allowing selected students for a second chance in placements. The selection will be based on the merits.
The said rule was designed to provide an equal opportunity to every student but the uncertainty caused by the pandemic has made them think to bring changes in consultation of other IIMs.
It is more likely that the head of placement committees of various IIT and IIMs would conduct a meeting to discuss the following course of action. Sources over the media inform us that a total of 40 job offers has been revoked by the companies so far.
