Delhi Metro, bus rides likely to be free of cost for women

Delhi Metro

New Delhi The Delhi Metro and buses fare may be free for women in the national capital if everything goes well according to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s planning. Women in Delhi can soon travel free on public transport announced the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. He kept the Assembly elections due next year in mind, and decided to make metro and bus travels free for women in Delhi. The proposal has an objective “to encourage women to use public transport”.

Highlights-

  1. Arvind Kejriwal announces free travel in Delhi buses and Delhi Metro for women in Delhi.

  2. There has also been made a special provision for giving up the subsidy to those who can afford the fares can give up their subsidy to the needy ones.

  3. Decision is still in a dilemma which will be implemented within 2-3 months according to the Chief Minister.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, a 50 per cent equity partner in Delhi Metro, is planning to make travelling for women by buses and Metro free of cost, according to the latest updates by the Chief Minister (Mr. Arvind Kejriwal).

Where making the bus rides free for women would be easy but the metro rides, on the other hand, will require some technological changes to impose this rule. For now, there are no provisions in metro to provide concessional passes to anyone.

The transport minister Kailash Gahlot has already taken meetings to discuss various aspects of fare-waiver to women in all public transport buses – run by DTC and DIMTS – and Delhi metro. The move, which is yet to be cleared by the centre, will be launched in three months, said Mr. Kejriwal, adding that it would cost the Delhi government Rs. 700 crore this year. On whether he needed to run the plan by the Centre, given Delhi’s partial statehood status, he replied in the negative.

While the provision will take approximately 2-3 months to implement, there are some pinpoints graving for the topic from the very start itself. Where some female citizen of Delhi, pointed out this move to be an indication of false empowerment. Women can look after their expenses and this has nothing to do with safety measures. There is a need of a more inter-sectional approach to it.

Some are taking it as an initiative to grab the votes before the assembly elections.

There have been no statements made by the DMRC on this plan. AAP being 50% shareholders in the Delhi Metro may be able to influence the decision. However, such a change will lead to a hike in ridership, leading to additional pressure.

Well, this information is still under a dilemma and no final verdict is on board for now. We will keep you updated as the news will get heat up. Stay tuned with TechyMob!
