Apart from Bollywood, South Indian films are also being released on the OTT platform. The Jyothika starrer court drama Tamil film ‘Ponmagal Vandhal’ was to be released in theaters on March 27, but the lockdown could not be done due to this. Now the makers plan to release the film on Amazon Prime Video.
The lockdown has been in operation throughout the country for several weeks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus epidemic, which will continue in the coming weeks. Due to the lockdown, the release of big films has been banned for the past several weeks, due to the closure of theaters. But now it seems that the filmmakers cannot wait any longer, hence they have started resorting to the OTT platform due to the closure of theaters. After South Films, Bollywood filmmakers have also announced to release their films through online streaming platforms. The first step in this direction has been taken by the film ‘Gulabo-Sitabo’, which will no longer be released in theaters but will be released on Amazon Prime Video. On June 12, the film will be released on Amazon Prime. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana playing important roles in the film. At the same time, Sujit Sarkar is directing this film.
On Thursday, Amitabh Bachchan, Ayushmann Khurrana, Amazon, Rising Sun Films and Kino Works announced it via social media that Gulabo Sitabo will premiere on Amazon Prime Video. A poster was shared proclaiming this, in which Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana are seen in their respective roles. The story of the film is based on two puppets from Lucknow, Gulabo (Amitabh Bachchan), and Sitabo (Ayushmann Khurrana).
In this shared poster, the logo of Sony channel Sony Max is also seen, which can be inferred that ‘Gulabo-Sitabo’ film can also be released on Pay TV after the June 12 Amazon premiere. However, Sony India has not made any official statements regarding this.
It is worth noting that apart from Bollywood, South Indian films are also being released on the OTT platform. The Jyothika starrer court drama Tamil film ‘Ponmagal Vandhal’ was to be released in theaters on March 27, but it was continuously postponed after the lockdown. After which the makers have now planned to release this film on Amazon Prime Video. It is reported that it will be released on Amazon Prime Video in late May. Apart from this, the upcoming horror-comedy ‘Laxmi Bomb’ by Bollywood player Akshay Kumar is also going to be released in theaters on 22 May. But the news came in the middle that the producers of the film are talking to the OTT platform companies for the release of this film. However, ‘Gulabo-Sitabo’ will be the first Bollywood film to be released directly on Amazon Prime Video.
