Every year National Education Day is celebrated on November 11 in the memory of exemplary contributions of the Maulana Azad in the field of education, institution building and the nation building. Maulana Azad played a pivotal role in the establishment of the education system in India. He left his indelible imprints behind for the future generations of India.
The education day is observed on the birth anniversary of the Sir Maulana Abul Kalam Azad who was the first education minister of the independent India. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was a great scholar, freedom fighter and an eminent educationist. He was a great figure who formed key architecture of the education in the independent India.
According to Maulana Azad, “the schools are the laboratories that produce the future citizens of the country”. The historians say that the base for higher education, technological and scientific research and education was laid by Maulana Azad. The education that he pioneered in the Indian subcontinent proved instrumental in the industrialization and in the emergence of recent knowledge based industries.
The Maulana Azad was far-sighted and he had a clear perception on the primary purpose of education. While addressing a meeting of the central advisory board of education (CBSE), he quoted that the primary goal of any system is to build balanced minds that cannot be misled.
While being an education minister, he was grounded by the responsibility of pivoting an education system that can inculcate the practical knowledge and the urge to find the innovation among the aspiring minds of the Indians while giving them the values to adhere to a national spirit. He had been given the duty to from a firm education system that was absent in the colonial era. The former president Pranab Mukherjee while addressing an Event on the national education day said that the Maulana Azad instilled the spirit of rationality and enquiry in the Indian education system. He enumerates the efforts of the great personality in the establishment of educational bodies in the Indian education system. He said that the Maulana Azad was the institution builder. The university grants commission, Indian institute of technology and other bodies are the various prestigious owing to this man.
Maulana Azad established the first Indian institute of technology, IIT kharagpur and council of scientific and industrial research. He pivoted up a number of institutions like lalit kala academi, sangeet natak academi, Indian institute for cultural relations (ICCR) and sahitya academi to establish the cultural and socio-religious inter- linkages in the India. The institutions that he started up were founded on the testimony of his farsightedness and his clear vision.
On the national day, the people of the Indian subcontinent swore on the dedication of Maulana Abdul Azad and promise to carry forward the legacy of the great person who worked to realize the Indian dream to nurture highly educational minds that can enlighten the whole world in the future, six decades ago.
the first celebrations of the Maulana Azad was observed on November 11, 2208 at Vigyan Bhawan by then president Pratibha Patil in new Delhi, to remember the contributions of the Maulana Azad.
Maulana Azad was awarded by the Bharat’s highest honor, the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna in 1992.
