The Supreme Court has verdict the historic verdict for women in the Army today and has approved the High Court verdict giving permanent commission.
On Monday, the Supreme Court has agreed on the permanent commission of women in the army, as well as women eligible for command post. The court has also fixed time for this. The court has directed the Center to set up a permanent commission for women in the army within three months.
Tanya Shergill and Captain Madhumita mentioned
Justice DY Chandrachud Singh said that there is no reason to deny permanent commission to women. She also named leading female officers like Tanya Shergill and Captain Madhumita. The court also mentioned the commander women officers at Leh, Udhamanagar. Also, women were qualified for command post.
Need to change mindset about women: Court
The Delhi High Court had already decided in favor of women, it was taken to Supreme Court. The court said, “The mindset about women must be changed and true equality should be brought in the army. Women work shoulder to shoulder with men.
Women are eligible for command post
The Center argued that ‘command post’ responsibility in the army cannot be given to women. Command post means to command and lead a legion. The court said that preventing women from coming to the command post is against equality. The court further said that depriving women of equal opportunity is unacceptable and disturbing.
The High Court’s decision was in 2010
In fact, in March 2010, the High Court ordered a permanent commission like that of men after completion of 14 years of service in the army. This order was given under the Short Service Commission.
