West Bengal Launches Free Crop Insurance Scheme For Farmers 2019

West Bengal takes a step after Madhya Pradesh to help its farmers. Starts crop insurance scheme.

OVERVIEW

West Bengal state government has announced to start a free crop insurance scheme. The scheme will be known as Bangla Shashya Bima Yojna. The scheme will come into effect for the Kharif Season of 2019.

Indian farming insurance company is playing an active role in this scheme. The scheme will initially commence in 15 districts. This farming insurance scheme will be free of cost for the benefit for all farmers residing in the area.

The West Bengal state government will cover all the expenses of this farming insurance. It includes areas such as Darjeeling, East Bardhaman, West Bardhaman, Kalimpong, East Medinapur, Malda, Hoogly, Naadia, Murshidabad, Kooch Behar, Birbhum, Purulia, South Dinajpur, North 24 Pargana and South 24 Parganas. This scheme includes Wheat, Jute and Corn crops.

BENEFITS

The scheme is aimed entirely for the benefit of farmers.

The state government will bear the entire expense of this scheme.

Each and every Farmer will benefit from this scheme regardless of whether their loans are approved or not.

As per scheme, the amount will be paid in four phases:

In its first phase, Insurance amount will be paid for any losses incurred during sowing. No damage should be done to the crop.

In the second phase, if crop gets damaged then the insurance amount will be deposited.

In third phase, Amount will be paid if crop gets damaged after being left out in the field during or after harvest.

In fourth phase, Amounts can be recovered via insurance during bad weather like heavy rain, droughts, damages by insects, etc.

The government will decide the amount of insurance which will be calculated on per hectare basis. The new scheme aims to enable farmers to live their life with dignity and honor.

In past few years, the West Bengal state government has benefitted 30 lakh farmers by paying around Rs 1200 crore. It involved covering damages waiving due to harsh weather from droughts or floods and waving off the agriculture tax and mutation fee. They have also introduced Krishak Bandhu Scheme.

Farmers have faced a lot of problems across India in the recent past. Under BJP’s regime, Farmers from across Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have staged protests in Centre and state. A lot of issues are faced by farmers, many do not even receive correct pay. Some are dependent on government to sell the same. There is also not much relief in interest rates for taking farm loans.

Farmers play a very important role in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). So, this state centric project is taking a step to raise standard of living among farmers. They are expecting higher GDP growth in return.

Furthermore, A lot of farmers have committed suicides in past few years. The new scheme will save them recover losses and continue to live without debt pressure.
